THE CLAIM
Ram Nath Kovind gained three million new Twitter followers within minutes of becoming President.
Summary of the documented claim, not a verbatim quotation.Real follower total; misleading implication of instant new followers
Back on planet Earth.
The official presidential account had millions of followers when Ram Nath Kovind took office in July 2017. That number was not evidence that millions of people had independently pressed Follow in a few minutes.
Twitter’s own transition announcement explains that existing followers would automatically follow both the current presidential account and the archive of Pranab Mukherjee’s official tweets. The institutional audience continued across office-holders. “Debuted with” and “gained millions of new followers” describe different events.
The growth strategy was remarkably efficient: inherit the office account.
