“First ever” meets the archive.
History called. It would like its earlier flights back.

THE CLAIM
The December 2017 seaplane ride was India’s first-ever seaplane flight.
Summary of the documented claim, not a verbatim quotation.Misleading when “first” means the first-ever seaplane flight in India
Back on planet Earth.
The historical record is enough to challenge a sweeping first-ever claim about the December 2017 seaplane ride. A Ministry of Civil Aviation release dated 27 December 2010 records the launch of Jal Hans and describes a seaplane service for the Andaman Islands.
The scope matters. First on a route, first scheduled service of a particular kind, and first flight anywhere in India are not synonyms. Our finding applies to the broad first-ever wording, not every narrower claim made about later services. Compare the contemporary coverage with the earlier official record. Scroll also records that the original headline was later changed; that correction is part of the history.
Before declaring a historic first, it helps to ask history whether it has been here before.
