The photograph travelled. Its caption took a shortcut.
A picture can be real and the story attached to it can still be wrong.

THE CLAIM
A photograph shows AIIMS doctors paying their last respects to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Summary of the documented claim, not a verbatim quotation.Miscaptioned: the photograph was from China, not AIIMS
Back on planet Earth.
Alt News documented an image used in coverage of doctors paying respects to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Its investigation traced the photograph to China in 2012, where doctors were honouring an organ donor.
A real photograph does not authenticate a new caption. The people and the act pictured deserve their own context. The error being examined here is the image’s use as a record of a different event. We link the investigation and do not reproduce the hospital photograph.
The image had a history. The caption booked it a different destination.
