THE CLAIM
Indian Oil issued a warning that filling vehicle fuel tanks to their maximum limit in summer could cause explosions.
Summary of the documented claim, not a verbatim quotation.False attribution: Indian Oil rejected the circulating notice.
Back on planet Earth.
Alt News documented the multilingual notice and linked Indian Oil's April 2023 clarification. The company said filling up to the manufacturer's specified maximum was safe in summer as well as winter. It had addressed similar claims before.
The important qualifier is the manufacturer's specified limit. This is not an instruction to overfill a tank or disregard a vehicle's safety guidance. The false notice also included alarming incident claims and advice to circulate it widely, but repetition did not turn it into an official announcement. For a notice bearing a company's name, its actual statements are a better starting point than a forwarded logo.
The hottest thing in the notice was the imagination.
