THE CLAIM
Amul published a cartoon attacking the government with a GST-themed slogan in 2022.
Summary of the documented claim, not a verbatim quotation.Altered image: an older advertisement was repurposed.
Back on planet Earth.
BOOM's review of GST-related viral claims identified the supposed advertisement as an altered version of an Amul image published on 16 May 2014. The original congratulated Narendra Modi after the election; the GST wording was added in the circulating version.
That chronology matters because the original image preceded the GST rollout. A recognisable mascot and familiar visual style do not authenticate every sentence placed alongside them. This entry concerns attribution of a particular advertisement, not an opinion on GST rates or Amul's products. Satire can imitate an advertising format; passing the imitation off as the company's own statement changes the claim.
The brand supplied the drawing. Someone else supplied the politics.
